Indonesia urges G-8 on carbon emissions

Indonesia has insisted the advanced countries grouped in G-8 on immediately meeting their commitment to reduce their carbon emission, and fulfilling their responsibility to the developing countries in the handling dealing with climate and environmental change.

The remark was made by Masnellyarti Hilman in her capacity as Deputy to the Environment Minister for Natural Resources Conservation Improvement and Environmental Damage Control who led an Indonesian delegation to the Environment Ministrial Meeting of G-8 here on Sunday.

Masmellyarti Hilman said sustainable handling of environmental issues and climate change depended on cooperation between the two sides especially between advanced and developing countries in a concrete framework.

"There are three matters which have come under public spotlight in the ministrial meeting, namely the transfer of technology, adaptation and fund raising," she said.

Japan as host to the G-8 meeting has invited the developing countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Mexico to provide them with important inputs.

Japan will also host a finance ministerial meeting on April 5-6, 2008 and the results of the meeting will serve as input and proposals in the G-8 summit in Hokkaido, Japan, in July 2008.

"The intention to reduce carbon emissions of 50 percent in the next 50 years is often deemed as a future program, so that it may entail a medium-term program often made as indicator of the seriousness of all parties," he said.

Masnellyarti Hilman was of the opinion that the advanced countries till now have yet to further meet their commitment, while the handling of environmental and climate change needed more concrete steps.(*)
